One argument, in support of his views, he deduces from the above passage of Graah's text, he being of opinion that the Erkilliks there mentioned are in reality no other than the descendants of the old Icelandic colonists. The tall stature, the large nose, and bushy eyebrows, are all characteristic features of men descendants of the old Northmen, as is no less the peculiar intonation of the voice in speaking, which the Greenlander, in his simplicity, compared to the howling of dogs. It is not a little remarkable, that as the Greenlanders of the East coast thus represent the country West of them to be inhabited by these Erkilliks, those of the West coast hold the country East of them to be the abode of a race of men differing from themselves in origin, as well as in various other particulars. In other words, both thus concur in representing the interior of the country as inhabited by a race of people different from the Esquimaux. There is a tradition of the West coast having once been visited by an individual of this race, named Grimmersoak; and in this name Wormskiold finds another proof of the Northern origin of the race, to which he is said to have belonged, Grimmer (Grimmur) being an Icelandic proper name, and soak an Esquimaux word, signifying great or big. Wormskiold is decidedly of opinion that Graah would have discovered the real descendants of the old Icelandic colonists, had he but penetrated into the interior of the country, in place of confining himself to a mere coasting voyage.
